Making makeup last in South African heat
Humidity, a car in the sun and a long day out. What actually helps.
A Highveld afternoon in January and a coastal December are two different problems, and neither is kind to a face done at seven in the morning. Here is what actually helps, and what is mostly repeated because it sounds sensible.
Why it slides
Two separate things are happening. Heat thins the oils already on your skin and the oils in the product, so both move more easily. Humidity slows evaporation, which means anything water based takes longer to set and stays movable for longer. Sweat then lifts product off the surface and carries it into whichever crease is nearest.
Knowing which of the two you are dealing with matters. Inland heat is dry, so the enemy is oil and sun. Coastal heat is humid, so the enemy is product that never fully sets.
What genuinely extends wear
Less product. This is the one that works and the one nobody wants to hear. A thick layer has more to slide and takes longer to set. Two thin passes outlast one heavy one by a wide margin.
Letting each layer set before adding the next. In humidity this can be a full minute, and rushing it is what causes the patchiness people blame on the foundation.
Blotting rather than adding. When shine appears at midday, press a tissue against the skin and lift. Adding more powder over a wet surface is what produces the thick, separated look by late afternoon.
Almost every long wear problem is a thickness problem. Thin layers, properly set, beat any product bought specifically to fix the symptom.
Brows in particular
Brows fail differently from the rest of the face. They rarely melt, they get rubbed off, usually by a hand pushing hair back or wiping sweat away. The fix is behavioural rather than cosmetic: blot the forehead by pressing, not by dragging across the brow.
It also helps to start on properly dry skin. Any residue of moisturiser left sitting on the brow area gives the product nothing to hold to.
The tips that do less than claimed
Setting spray helps a little and is routinely credited with far more than it does. It will not hold a thick layer in place through a hot day.
Refrigerating products makes them feel pleasant going on and changes nothing about how they wear an hour later.
The practical version
Thin layers, properly set, and a tissue in your bag. Take the pen with you if your day runs long, because the tail of the brow is the first thing to go and it takes about ten seconds to put back.
